Richard Goode, much loved as one of the world’s leading interpreters of the Classical and Romantic
piano repertoire is universally hailed for his music making and the tremendous emotional power of
his glorious playing.

A native New Yorker whose career path took him from Mannes College of Music to the Curtis
Institute, on the way acquiring many honors and awards, he is also represented by prize winning
recordings as soloist in Bach, Beethoven and Chopin and in partnership with soprano Dawn Upshaw
in lieder recital and clarinettist Richard Stolzman in Brahms sonatas.

As a young and continuing participant at Marlboro Music he was the natural successor as its Artistic
Director after the death of founder Rudolf Serkin in 1991. There he continues the unique work and
vision of Marlboro Music: to serve music, inspire and develop new generations of musical leaders
and thereby enrich audiences.

We are enormously grateful for this generous benefit performance, which will assist us to launch
our 40th Anniversary year of a Summer Music Festival of characteristically diverse programming of
‘Music Old and New performed by Artists from Near and Far.’ Proceeds will also enable us to continue
making available Musical Offerings by which we assist year-round for local community celebrations
and provide desperately needed assistance to local elementary school curriculums through Arnold
Black School Music Enrichment Projects.

We invite you to this exceptional musical evening of Bach, Chopin and Debussy played by the preeminent
pianist Richard Goode with its opportunity to celebrate and support Mohawk Trail Concerts
for our Fortieth Anniversary year.

TOCAR y LUCHAR

(To Play and to Fight)

a documentary film by Alberto Arvelo Mendoza,
about the remarkable Youth Orchestra of Venezuela

To Play and To Fight presents the captivating story of the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System - an incredible network of hundreds of orchestras formed within most of Venezuela's towns and villages. Once a modest program designed to expose rural children to the wonders of music, the system has become one of the most important and beautiful social phenomena in modern history. The documentary portrays the inspirational stories of world class musicians trained by the Venezuelan system, including the Berlin Philharmonic's youngest player Edicson Ruiz and world renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel. With interviews with many of the world's most celebrated musicians including the great tenor Placido Domingo, Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Guiseppe Sinopoli, and Eduardo Mata, To Play and To Fight is an inspirational story of courage, determination, ambition, and love showing us that... only those who dream can achieve the impossible.

Shown this past spring at the Jones Library in Amherst, MTC will be sponsoring several other showings of this inspiring film in the Valley.

To be announced.
